Improve Oral Health Through Healthy Nutritious Diet

Our oral health is intertwined with our dietary choices. The obvious reason being that our teeth and other components of the oral structure come into contact with food on a daily basis. Also, our bodies need vital nutrients to maintain our soft tissue health and tooth enamel integrity. It’s important to make mindful dietary choices to preserve our good oral health.

Smile Healthy with a Balanced Diet

Our bodies need a well-rounded diet to stay healthy. Without proper micro and macronutrients, the body will function at a deficit. Nutritional deficits can cause a host of problems, like fatigue and digestive issues.

Here are some tips to incorporate into your eating habits every day to promote good oral and overall health:

Drink at least a half-gallon of water daily

That’s 64 ounces or four standard-sized commercial water bottles. Our bodies are mostly water, and without adequate hydration, we suffer in function and aesthetics. Hair, skin, and nails all benefit from regular water consumption- so does our digestive system, including our teeth. Water washes sugar and food particles from the inside of our mouth before they can fester into plaque and eventual decay. Protect your teeth and enjoy the benefits of hydration by drinking lots of water.

Eat a varied diet, incorporate foods from all food groups

This ensures your body receives all the nutrients it needs from reliable sources. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean sources of protein are all important elements of a well-rounded diet. With proper nutrition, your body can complete its daily functions with ease. Only then can it devote energy towards fighting infection and producing enamel.

Moderate your sugar consumption

Sugar feeds the bacteria in plaque and they in turn cause cavities and decay. Excessive sugar consumption is bad for the body as well. Studies have proven that the body can become addicted to sugar, and will experience withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability. When you do consume sugar, remember to drink water afterward to help keep your mouth clean.
