Porcelain Onlays

Dental professional cleaning patient's teeth for porcelain onlays.

The appearance of a person’s smile can be enhanced using porcelain onlays. It is a dental restoration that blends in with the patient’s natural teeth in terms of color. Onlays are partial crowns that are used to preserve and restore badly damaged teeth. Porcelain onlays are created in a professional dental laboratory and permanently bonded to the tooth by your dentist.

Teeth that have substantial filling faults, damage from trauma or illness, or that need to be carefully restored can all benefit from onlays. Onlays are a wonderful alternative to crowns since they require less tooth structure to be removed during preparation than crowns (caps). Onlays are almost exactly the same as inlays.

Dental onlay, like other dental restorations, are not always permanent and may need to be renewed. They are incredibly durable and will last for many years, giving you a beautiful, long-lasting smile.

Reasons for onlay restorations:

  • Large fillings.
  • What is the procedure for getting an onlay?
  • Teeth that are broken or fractured.
  • Cosmetic improvement.
  • Decayed Teeth.
  • Fillings that are cracked or fractured.

What is the procedure for getting an onlay?

Two visits are typically needed for an onlay treatment. During your initial session, multiple very accurate impressions known as molds will be taken, this will be needed to produce your unique onlay and a temporary restoration.

The dentist will remove any decay and/or old fillings while the tooth is numbed. The area will then be thoroughly cleaned and meticulously prepped, with the surface shaped to match an onlay restoration. While your onlay is being created at a dental laboratory, a temporary filling will be put to safeguard the tooth.

Your new onlay will be perfectly fixed into place at your second appointment. A few adjustments may be necessary to provide a proper fit and a comfortable bite.

You will get care instructions following the completion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and timely dental checkups will extend the life of your new onlay.
